As with DiMarzio's game changing Relentless™ pickups, they removed all the hard edges, used metal covers, and added an arch to the top contour of the pickup, bringing the sensing coils closer to the middle strings. These improvements increase the string balance and overall dynamic range.
The Colossal™ is a fully humbucking design and is completely shielded, making it a better choice for both recording and live shows. The pickup can be used in series, parallel, or split coil configurations, making multiple sounds easily achievable without the need for digital filters. The Colossal™ can be combined with active electronics, but keep in mind that the filtering stage of an active EQ circuit only removes frequencies. For optimal signal processing, the dynamic range and frequency response must be there to begin with, and this is where the Colossal™ pickup shines.
The Colossal™ Bridge has a richly detailed mid-range that growls, delivering notes with definition and openness, and it works well with dropped tunings. The highs are present and precise without harshness, and the lows are thunderous and tight, like the footsteps of a giant.
